Making a difference
with every load
There isn’t one simple solution to climate change, there are thousands. Climate change is a big deal – for our families, for our communities and for the planet. While we must campaign together to tackle the big causes, in our own lives small actions can also make a big difference.
How we wash our clothes can make a difference to the environment - from the type and size of detergent bottle that we use, to the water temperature we select, every choice matters, and small changes could save millions of litres of water and help us tackle climate change.
It is estimated that up to 58% of the greenhouse gas that impacts on our planet comes from the home. This means that every time we wash at high temperatures, we’re releasing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which trap heat and can accelerate the rate of climate change. Extreme weather events are being felt worldwide already, from heavy rainfall to heat waves, with devastating consequences to the livelihoods of families in South Africa and worldwide.
Helping our planet is a shared responsibility between people and businesses. At Unilever, we are committed to making great products that are kind to the planet but we don’t want our work to stop at the supermarket shelves. We want to make sustainable choices easy and convenient for families.
There are lots of ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle in our everyday lives, and we can start with some basic household chores, like laundry. OMO has specially formulated laundry detergent that can help you reduce your household’s greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact. OMO’s Auto Liquid still has the unbeatable cleaning power of OMO’s washing powder but uses 32% less water per wash. What’s more, the packaging is eco-friendly, releasing 30% less greenhouse gas emissions than OMO’s washing powder packaging. If everyone in South Africa switched to auto liquid, it would make a mighty big change for one small choice!
As part of our Sustainable Living Plan, we want to halve our impact on the environment by 2020. But we can’t do it alone. Every five minutes, there are more than one million people using OMO laundry detergents. This means that, in a single year, we have 125 billion chances to be a little greener! The actions we all take today will help us prepare for tomorrow, creating a bright future for our children and for generations to come.
Here are some small changes you can make to your laundry habits that will really make a difference:
- Choose quick wash cycles. This will save you time and water.
- Use only the correct dose of detergent.
- Use concentrated liquids, like OMO, that use less packaging and have a smaller greenhouse gas impact on the environment.
- Wash cool: clothes can still be brilliantly clean at 15°C. Even just switching from 40°C to 30°C will make a big difference, as less energy is required to heat the water.
- Use eco-friendly washing machines that are designed to save water and energy with every wash.
