Flush out poor sanitation
by cleaning our school’s toilets
By joining forces, we can work together to raise awareness of the need for adequate sanitation throughout South Africa.
Curable diseases like diarrhoea is the cause of approximately 800 000 children dying every year, equating to more than 2 000 children a day. This is caused by drinking unsafe water due to poor sanitation and poor hygiene.
Children like Amanda are speaking up and asking “I wonder why I’m always sick? I wonder why my friends don’t come to school? When will I go to school to learn? When will things change?”
We’ve heard this cry for help and that’s why, for the past 5 years, Domestos has been involved in an initiative to refurbish toilet facilities among South Africa’s primary schools that have poor infrastructure, with an overall aim to promote hygiene education and improve the health and wellbeing of more than a billion people by 2020, globally.
Providing adequate sanitation at schools is crucial to the development and well-being of children. The lack of infrastructure infringed on the child’s right to education reduces the chances of a child leading a quality and dignified life.
To help in achieving improved sanitation, Unilever, has provided schools with cleaning materials and toilet paper supplies in an effort to restore a basic human right to children and staff, and to stress the importance of adopting healthy hygiene habits.
So far, 23 schools have been improved by installing new toilets, sinks and taps and painting the walls and doors, benefiting over 22 000 kids by making their toilets a cleaner, safer, germ-free environment. Disease and infections related to sanitation in the schools are now down by nearly 70%, and attendance has soared to over 80%.
We are achieving great things but we need your help to raise awareness of the need for proper sanitation in South Africa. Watch and share the Domestos film now and join Unilever brightFuture to stay updated on the latest progress of our initiatives in South Africa.
