Improving Kids’ Math Skills
As Easy As 1, 2, 3
Making learning fun! A new interactive game that is improving the maths literacy of thousands of children across South Africa.
South Africa may have one of the lowest maths literacy rates in the world, but it’s up there when it comes to tech literacy. The market boasts an impressive 85% mobile penetration, so using the latter to boost the former seemed a like an unmissable opportunity.
Technology has proven a successful way to increase maths literacy in South Africa – and, according to our calculations, it has already added up to a great success.
OMO Fast Kids Maths is the interactive, gamified learning experience that is transforming lives. The game caters for kids aged 6 to 18 and makes the prospect of maths a whole lot tastier for gamers, by engaging them by offering real world rewards – of the ice cream variety. Once certain milestones are achieved in the game, discount tokens on Paddle Pop ice cream, and other products including Hungry Lion vouchers, are unlocked, ensuring that parents encourage their little ones to keep learning.
To top this off, Unilever has created a leader board to give the kids a sense of their ranking within the wider Fast Kids community – encouraging healthy competition amongst children to succeed.
Meet Matapa - a young lady who has improved her grades dramatically with OMO Fast Kids Maths and is now is on a path to her brighter future.
Christean Ntapo is another one of the children, who has benefited greatly from the OMO Fast Kids Maths app. “One day, when I grow up, I want to be an astronaut and I think maths will help me be an astronaut,” he says.
In the spirit of mathematics, it seems only appropriate to crunch some numbers. The Fast Kids community continues to grow, with an average of between 100 and 150 new sign-ups every day. So far, over 184 000 kids have enhanced, not just their maths skills, but the quality of life for their families.
The mobi-site not only benefits the children, but the livelihood of the whole family, as parents are able to obtain generous discounts on every day essentials. Not to mention, resting safe in the knowledge that their children have a brighter future ahead of them.
Teachers also benefit from the mobi-site by giving them a new, fun and engaging way of teaching an otherwise difficult subject that most children struggle to understand, making their jobs that much easier and more rewarding for them.
“The intention is to further complement the efforts of educators to address the critical skills gap in our country in terms of producing future generations of individuals that are proficient in maths,” says Andrew Mysell, Omo Marketing Manager at Unilever. “The mobile app is an interactive and convenient way in which to engage children in a safe environment.”
OMO Fast Kids Maths will not only be helping children today, it will benefit future generations to come, as knowledge can be shared and passed down from generation to generation. With this in mind, you certainly don’t have to be Pythagoras to work out that OMO Fast Kids Maths is a resounding hit.
