Climate change, and an ever-growing population, is creating a higher demand for fruit, vegetables and other grown foods than ever before. Making responsible choices in our food shopping has never mattered more.
It’s hard to imagine that every meal that we prepare can be part of a solution for our planet. Climate change is real and is becoming an increasing concern. As the world’s population keeps growing, so does the demand for food to be grown, and it’s our planet that is paying the ultimate price. Today, farming and agriculture makes up for roughly one third of our greenhouse gas emissions and uses 70% of our water, on a global scale. The quality of soil is gradually degrading and yet, in order to satisfy demand, we will need to grow more food around the world than we have in the past 8,000 years.
For businesses, this means that sourcing the best ingredients is no longer just about great taste. It is also about farming responsibly, ensuring ingredients are sustainably grown with respect for the environment, and to the farmers who grow them. For people, it means making responsible choices when doing the weekly shop and supporting businesses, which are doing their part for their environment. Sustainable sourcing by businesses helps farmers get the most out of their land and means they are able to increase their yields whilst reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, saving water and safeguarding their farmland for generations to come.
As one of the world’s leading buyers of ingredients such as tomatoes, onions and herbs, Unilever brand Knorr has the power to help transform farming practices for the benefit of the planet, improve farmers’ livelihoods and help families bring delicious meals with sustainably grown ingredients to their dinner tables. Knorr invests up to €1 million a year into the Knorr Sustainability Partnership Fund, which helps farmers and suppliers adopt sustainable agriculture practices, as laid out in the Unilever Sustainable Agricultural Code, to help ensure all farms are compliant by 2020. For every project, Knorr offers to invest 50% of the budget required - investing in drip irrigation, soil preservation and biodiversity projects among others.
José Gamez, owner of a Knorr Landmark Farm for pumpkins in Mendoza, Argentina, has been involved in agriculture since childhood. Passionate about spreading the word about the importance of sustainable farming practices, José stresses:
“We have to continue doing this because it’s our future and, to keep doing things right, it’s worth it. That’s what I believe. It’s my masterpiece and I’m very proud to produce (in this way)”
A bright future has already begun
Together with our farmers, we have made great progress so far in our commitment to source all of our raw agricultural ingredients sustainably by 2020. Today, 96% of our top 13 vegetables and herbs used in our sauces, soups and seasonings are grown sustainably, by farmers who meet the requirements of Unilever’s Sustainable Agriculture Code. In North America and Europe, all fresh potatoes, tomatoes and carrots are now also grown sustainably.
In recognition of our hardworking farmers, and to celebrate our shared success, Knorr award ‘Knorr Landmark Farm’ status to farms, which exemplify a gold standard of responsible, sustainable practices. We already have over 40 of these landmark farms globally, with many more to come.
Knorr believes that using sustainably grown and sourced ingredients makes a big difference to the taste of our products, farmers’ wellbeing and the future of the planet. We work closely with some of the world’s most talented chefs, who, like us, are passionate about cooking with sustainably sourced ingredients. Chef Einav Gefen is a self-confessed food fanatic, who has worked with Knorr for many years, developing products and tasty recipes that make mealtimes easier and more enjoyable – all while making a difference to the livelihood of farmers worldwide. Einav believes that future generations rely on sustainable living. “If we were not being responsible for where our ingredients come from and how they’re grown, my kids would suffer the consequences”, she says.
We all have an important role to play in supporting sustainability. For every small choice, there is the potential to make a big difference. They say we are what we eat, but what we eat can also help change the world.
