Teaching 300 million people
one life saving habit
Every child should be able to celebrate their fifth birthday. Yet every year, thousands die from preventable illnesses before they reach this age.
We believe there’s a simple solution to make sure as many children as possible live past their fifth birthday. A solution that ensures a child’s life is not lost to diarrhoea or pneumonia every 20 seconds. This solution lies in a bar of soap and clean water. Through the simple act of hand washing, children have a greater chance of staying healthy. Around the world, 4 out of 5 people don’t wash their hands after using the toilet, which means many parents are in need of vital support and guidance to understand the dangers of disease.
Through the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, Lifebuoy is helping children and mothers do just this by teaching them that clean looking hands aren’t necessarily germ-free and that hands must be washed with soap and water at key occasions to prevent disease.
Keeping children healthy means they’re more likely to attend and complete school, which means a bright future for generations to come.
Lifebuoy launched the ‘School of 5’ programme in 2012, with the aim to make South Africa healthier, one school at a time. The programme has been teaching children the key occasions to wash their hands with soap and water.
In the past five years, Lifebuoy has reached 9 million people in South Africa alone with our safe hand washing programmes, including ‘School of 5’. Some African villages have seen an increase in school attendance of as much as 40% since adopting Lifebuoy’s behaviour change programme.
